English Composition 1 (3231): 1030-1220

In class:
  1. We reviewed The Writing Process using magnets on the board (this should be in your Rules of Thumb handbook as handwritten notes),
  2. We began discussing The Five-Paragraph Essay--but solely the Introduction, today, which consists of the HOOK, the BACKGROUND, and the THESIS STATEMENT.
  3. We also discussed the narrative/ plot structure and how EXPOSITION fits into our introduction paragraph.
  4. I showed each of you the automatic MLA template called "Research Paper in MLA Style" in Microsoft Word. Use this for flawless MLA papers, but start recognizing how it is set-up. EVENTUALLY, you will have a quiz on MLA format.
  5. I passed-back your prewriting (FREEWRITING) exercise (done last week in the lab) with green highlighting atop the ideas I thought were worth developing into a longer narrative. You may choose to use an idea I highlighted, or you may choose to use something else entirely. IT IS UP TO YOU.
  6. We read a sample narrative (HANDOUT YOU NEED TO OBTAIN FROM ME) by a fellow PTI student. This is what you want your final copy to most closely resemble.
  7. When then ventured into the lab to write our INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH (the first draft)
  8. You were to mark each part of your introduction (HOOK, BACKGROUND, and THESIS) by using the “Review” function in Word.
  9. FINALLY, WE SAVED (on the U: Drive, please), PRINTED, AND SUBMITTED DRAFT 1

About Me

My basic social character is that of thirty year-old, rambunctious and FULL of energy, 5’3”, red haired, green eyed, sportier of retro/ colorful clothing who lives in an old Victorian house. I teach Critical Thinking, English Composition, and Effective Speech at Pittsburgh Technical Institute (PTI), and I was born in Pittsburgh, but raised in Butler, PA; I was formerly a senior high school English teacher who taught British Literature to seniors for four and a half years at Butler Area Senior High School (BSHS, Butler, PA). I have been teaching college classes since 2008, when I graduated with my Master's degree in Instructional Leadership and English.
