Effective Speech (3233): 240-430

IN CLASS:

We reviewed the information from the previous Tuesday. Since we only met once last week (due to the holiday), I felt it necessary to discuss the importance of interpersonal communication/  the speech communication process. We also reviewed our class's "nicknames," since we'd only met for two hours in a week. This was namely to establish a more comfortable speaking environment prior to interviewing and introducing a classmate.

Then I passed-out and interview form (with several surface-type personal questions); these questions were then used to interview an assigned classmate. This lasted roughly a 1/2 hour, and then we took a break.

After break I answered the questions from a personal standpoint for the class's benefit and as a model, and then the class proceeded to "take the stage" and introduce their assigned classmate.

Students were also supposed to tell their first (more formal) introductory speech about a significant event that happened to them, in their life, but we ran-out of time. I, however, told my story...if you're curious because you missed class, then ask! This was meant to demo exactly the type of story I was looking to hear from YOU!

Class introductory speeches (significant event stories) will be delivered during the first hour on Friday (240-330).

HOMEWORK:

On page 24 in the text, take a look at the section labeled "Key Terms." There are ten vocabulary terms from Chapter 1 that you NEED TO KNOW. Define each of the terms and provide an example demonstrating your understanding of each of those key terms.

For example:

Speech Communication Process (p. 4): The act or process of sending and receiving a message involving five elements: a speaker, a message, a channel (through which the message is sent), an audience, and a response.

i.e.: When Coop conducts class, she is the speaker who delivers her message (instruction) to the class (the audience), who hear her voice (the channel) and then offer feedback, both verbal and non-verbal (the response).
I want this for each "Key Term" on page 24.

Be ready to tell your story!
